Squamish Public Library

Community Meeting Room

Learn about zines and make your own.

Facilitated by artist and zine-maker Maïna Pertolas, this hands-on workshops will walk participants through making their own art zines. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have made a small zine.

The library will provide supplies such as paper, magazines, scissors, glue, washi tape, stamps, a photocopier and more!

If you want to include any of your personal photographs, art, or other visuals, please bring them along.

What is a zine?

A zine (pronounced “zeen”) is a DIY, low-budget, self-made, small publication that allows all voices to be heard. In a zine, anyone can write, print, and distribute their story, ideas, or art however they want to. Unlike traditional publishing, zines are the final product of the individual creator or group and are often “published” with the aid of photocopiers. To learn more about zines, check out  this book!

About the Instructor:

Maïna Pertolas (she/her) is a photographer who was born in France and is now based in Squamish, BC, on the unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱ú7mesh people. She has been dedicated to capturing the authenticity of individuals and exploring the diverse landscapes of British Columbia for several years.

Recently, her work has shifted towards storytelling and mental health through the medium of zines. She is currently developing a follow-up to her first zine, "Seule" and creating images that connect with her emotions.
